Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said she is doing politics for the people and her job is to help the common people.
"I do politics for the people, not for
me ... my job is to assist the common people," she said in an interview
published in London's Guardian newspaper today.
The Prime Minister said the people of
the country are enjoying democracy now and the democratic institutions
are working and the people are satisfied and enjoying it.
"What people want is their basic needs.
So, I'm trying to help people ensure their basic needs, that means food
security, healthcare, education, and job opportunity and a better life,"
she said.
Sheikh Hasina expressed her firm optimism that Bangladesh would be a middle-income country by 2021 and a developed one by 2041.
On the issue of press freedom, Sheikh
Hasina said her government had allowed an unprecedented expansion in
privately-controlled television channels, newspapers and online media
since the 1990s.
"Who brought the change? It is me. I
opened it up. Now we have 41 private television channels [and]
altogether nearly 700 newspapers all over the country. So they're
writing and they're totally free," she said.
The Prime Minister said the NGOs are also working according to the rules and law they have.
